This paper classifies the Korean publication period of Russian folktales into three categories. The first period is from 1960s to mid-1980s. Most of the books released during this period were retranslated from the Japanese translations of Russian folktales. Following the Japanese tradition, they were translated as part of the whole series of works. The second period is from 1986 to 2000. The publication since this period has been protected by copyright. Compared with the first period, a difference is that the publication of whole series of works decreased in size. The growing concern over children’s literature accelerated the independent publication of an individual work piece. The third period is after 2000s. In this period, the translation of children’s books has doubled in size. The publication of Russian folktales is tremendously growing too. There are important factors such as the renovation of school library facilities or the societal request of Korean writing skills. In addition, publication companies concerned only with children’s books start to focus on the translation of individual works rather than the whole series of works. They boost up the quality of books themselves, for instance, inserting illustrations or graphic materials. This paper investigates 51 books. Only 10 books out of them investigated are translated from the original works. It thus seems to be an urgent matter that the professional translators majoring in Russian literature take part in the translation project of Russian folktales. Although Russian majors increase in Korea since 2000s, retranslation of western publications rather than translation of original Russian works is significantly increasing. The publication via retranslations drops in value of studying the form and structure of Russian folktales. For instance, it is not easy to track down on what the origin of retranslated publications is or whether it is a Russian traditional folktale or not. The folktales edited by A. N. Afanas’ev are evidently classic texts. Yet a variety of variants would exist. It might be impossible to trace the origin of each folktale, but it is possible to find out what induces the variants via comparative studies of variants. The publications (sub)titled ‘Russian old stories’ must not be used as texts for further research if they were simply translated without the reliable identification of the original sources. In order to solve these problems, Russian experts should be more involved in the direct translation project from the Russian original texts. Moreover, systematic and profound research on Russian folktales should be conducted too. Also, the researchers of Russian folktales may interact with those of Korean folktales in order to gain a lot of synergy. In this environment, many researchers should undertake work of an interdisciplinary nature.
