Lunhua Jianshuo (First Lessons In Drawing, 論畵淺說) and Huaxing Tushuo (Illustrations and explanations for Drawing Figures, 畵形圖說) are the textbooks for teaching painting, published in Shanghai in 1880 and 1885 respectively. These two books demonstrate the methods and level of Modern art education during the late Qing dynasty when Western drawing techniques began to be introduced to the general public in China. The articles in Lunhua Jianshuo were published in the ‘Lunhua Jianshuo’ section in the newspaper for children named Xiaohai Yuebao (小孩月報). The main contents of this book are basic explanations for teaching techniques in drawing pictures. Huaxing Tushuo was written by Li Chasen (里察森) as a textbook for school class, and translated by Fu Lanya (傅蘭雅) (John Fryer, 1839~1928), which demonstrates the fundamentals of perspective and the precautions in practice in class. In the method of explaining the perspective, Lunhua Jianshuo mainly focuses on how to make a composition using the concepts of ‘base location’ (基址), ‘horizontal line’ (平線), and ‘vanishing point’ (聚點) for the purpose of drawing landscapes. On the other hand, Huaxing Tushuo generally accounts the basic principles of the perspective. Both books explain the Western painting methods by presenting illustrative illustrations and then explaining how to draw the same way with the illustrations.
