The purpose of this paper is to provide necessary information for Korean education as a foreign language course by analyzing synonyms of ‘gippeuda(기쁘다).’ Quantitative expansion and qualitative improvement of vocabulary by learning synonyms do not simply ends at the vocabulary learning. They have to be dealt importantly also because they are the basis of ability to communicate such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is difficult to differentiate synonyms only with meanings of words from a dictionary. A word does not exist alone as isolated but expresses its meaning by forming specific context with neighboring words. Therefore, in this work the synonyms of ‘gippeuda(기쁘다)’ and relations with their concurrent nouns are analyzed using ‘21st century Sejong Plan Corpus,’ which has vast amount of context information. After calculating t-score, which is a measure of concurrent relations, a network is constructed for analysis. The result shows that there are difference in concurrent relations among synonyms of ‘gippeuda(기쁘다).’ This difference means that the synonyms of ‘gippeuda(기쁘다)’ are similar only in their meaning, but different in the individual attribute. For example, it is natural to say ‘a song is heunggyeopda(흥겹다)’ but strange to say ‘a song is gippeuda(기쁘다).’ Furthermore, ‘jeulgeongun(즐거운) life’ is often used, but ‘bangangun(반가운) life’ is seldom used. If patterns of usage such as these are not fully understood, errors could occur in communication. Therefore, when teaching and learning synonyms in Korean education, typical examples of usage should be given enough in addition to the meaning of the word. Then words with concurrent relations and structure of phases that include the words should be introduced so that the students can understand the usage of the words. To suggest words of concurrent relations is also helpful in understanding their usage. Furthermore, to reduce errors in communication usages that are used frequently wrong need to be taught. And additional information related to the social and cultural background is sometimes needed. A good example for this is ‘bangangun(반가운) kkachi(까치),’ where cultural approach is necessary to explain the concurrent relationship between ‘bangapda(반갑다)’ and ‘kkachi(까치).’ This means that it is not enough to simply list example sentences that include words of concurrent relations. The study on the concurrent relations of synonyms would help select and use correct words in communication for foreign students who lack intuition in Korean language. Furthermore, the study is meaningful because it enables to differentiate the meaning of similar words more accurately compared to the approach merely from vocabulary.
