This paper examines Coleridge’s philosophy and poetics focusing on Biographia Literaria. It deals with a subject of criticism based on his epistemology. He believes that his work is made possible from his realization of the principle of natura naturans (self-causing activity of nature). In this firm philosophical vision, he sets the framework of criticism of harmony of opposition. Many critics have different perspectives on the structure of Biographia Literaria. This is due to the reckless attempt to combine its “sketches” and “opinions” together in a coherent way. This article suggests that the readers should be encouraged to understand the subject of each chapter and examine the whole structure. I would like to reveal that Biographia Literaria is a well-mixed text of Coleridge’s biography, his philosophical thought, and his poetics. In addition, I review the process of his writing through this process to help me to examine his philosophical thought and his criticism in an integrated way.
