This paper introduces the results of the acoustic analysis on the Buriat short vowels. 6 short vowels which appear in the intial syllable of a word, and 5 short vowels in the non-initial syllables are identified with the F1 and F2 of each vowels. 5 short vowels of the non-initial syllable are proposed as the variants (allophones) of the phoneme /ə/. Results of the previous researches on the Inner Mongolia dialects are introduced. Development of [ɔ] in Inner Mongolia dialects and that in Buriat language is compared. Relation between the number of the noninitial short vowels and the degree of the centralization in that language is mentioned.
