The aim of this paper is to describe the aspects of phonetic realizations of [+coronal] fricatives and affricates in Hezhe. In recent works on Manchu-Tungus languages, mainly carried out in China, it has been reported that there exit retroflexes in some Manchu-Tungus languages. But it seems that there are no retroflexes in Manchu-Tungus languages used in Russia, and even in Ling Chunsheng [凌純聲] (1934), there are not such retroflexes in Hezhe. Therefore, a close investigation of the [+coronal] fricatives and affricates in Manchu-Tungus languages is needed. In this paper, with acoustic methods we analysed the characteristics of [+coronal] fricatives and affricates in Mandarin, and compared them with those in Hezhe. Our assertions of them in this paper are as follows: Firstly, Cut-off frequencies of [+coronal] fricatives and affricates in Hezhe depend upon their place of articulation. Those of laminopostalveolars are the lowest, those of apico-alveolars the higest, and those of lamino-prepalatals in the middle of them. Cut-off frequecies of these sounds are higer before rounded vowels than before unrounded vowels. Secondly, in Hezhe fricatives and affricates, there are apico-alveolars, lamino-postalveolars, and lamino-prepalatals. But the existing descriptions of these sounds should be examined closely.
