This paper investigated and compared acoustic characteristics of the English and Korean alveolar fricatives in [_?] context. The investigation focused not only on the acoustic features of the fricatives themselves but also on the phonation modes of the vowels following the fricatives in question. The experimental methods included the friction duration, Fo, and the H1*-H2* measure, the last two of which were measured at both onset and middle positions of the post-fricative vowels. A total of 10 subjects―5 Americans and 5 Koreans(Seoulites)―participated in the recording and a total of 10 tokens (2 manner categories * 5 repetitions = 10 tokens) were obtained from each subject. The major finding for the English data was that the friction noise was significantly longer in /s/ sounds than in /z/ sounds. The H1*-H2* and Fo measures at the vowel onset position were significantly larger in the vowel following /s/ sounds than in the vowel following /z/ sounds. The Korean data showed that the friction noise was significantly longer in /s'/ sounds than in /s/ sounds. The H1*-H2* measure was found to be significantly larger at the vowel onset position in the vowel following /s/ sounds than in the vowel following /s'/ sounds. On the other hand, the Fo values at the vowel onset position showed no significant differences in both fricative classes.
