The old Manchu settlement Hetuala was the first capital of the Late Jin dynasty. There, on February 17, 1616, Nurhaci proclaimed himself an Emperor and announced a formation of a new state. In 1618 he announced his Seven grievances and started the war against Ming. In 1621 the capital was moved from Hetu-ala to Liaoyang and later to Shenyang. The garrison of the White Plain Banner was quartered in Hetu-ala to take care of the nearby Yongling tombs, which became a place of pilgrimage for almost all Qing emperors. In 1990-es it was still a typical old Manchu village, but later the reconstruction work started: population was moved to a newly constructed area outside the village wall, living houses were demolished and completely new buildings of imaginary palaces of Nurhaci were constructed in Chinese architectural style. The place was turned into a “historical” open-air museum, ethnographical village and a resort area. From historical point of view this museum is far from being similar to the original settlement of Nurhaci.
