Umeda Hiroyuki. 2006. 02. 28. Problems in Learning Korean Language in Japan. Bingual Research 30, 1-24. This paper surveys several important pointers when considering Korean language education in Japan. First, when we speak of Korean language education in Japan, we must limit it to the teaching of Korean used/spoken in Seoul, Korea and not the standard or Moonwhauh (the dialect based on Korean spoken in Pyeongyang and used by common laborers). In considering the length of vowels, especially in the light of a "generation gap" in Korean used in Seoul, '/어/ and /:어/' or '/애/ and /에/'must be clearly distinguished for instance. Furthermore, Korean language instructors must differentiate the differences in Korean words with double consonant endingsi.e., in a CVCC word like '값'the rationale for the first consonant /ㅂ/ versus the second /ㅅ/; variations in stems and word endings and their forms or constructions as well as phonological rules in the Korean language of Seoul.(Reitaku University, Japan)
