The alliance between DPRK and PRC has been formed in 1961. And, it has maintained for 55 years. We can estimate two state’s relationship with the alliance which was formed in and still maintained after the Cold-War ear. North Korea carried out its 4th nuclear test 6th January, 2016, in spite of international concerns and sanctions. Even, it conducted 5th test 9th September, 2016. International society imposed the toughest sanctions( the UN resolution 2270) which calls for a general ban on the import of North Korean coal, iron and iron ore, with some exceptions; prohibits the sale of aviation fuel to the North; and restricts the communist country from conducting banking transactions abroad. In this backdrop, this research focuses on why China maintain the alliance with North Korea which is trouble maker in international community. In other words, this study will assess the DPRK-PRC alliance on the basis of alliance theory, especially three determinants, threat perception, policy coordination, and value as an alliance partner. Then, it will find out ROK’s strategic implications.
