A Study of Russian Paganism - Focused on the Acceptance of Christianity and its Relationship - Hwang, Young-Sarm Paganism was the Russian religion before the acceptance of Orthodoxy from Byzantine. This fact can be found in other countries. In this paper I'll show you why the Russians accepted Orthodoxy, and how paganism played a role in that process. And what was the relationship between paganism and christianity in Kievan Rus. The Russian paganism survived in 19-20 century resisting the church. The Russian people didn't give up their pagan tradition with ease. The dual religion(dvoeverie) appeared and prolonged to the 17th century. Many scholars expressed that many Russians remained with pagan believers, especially in the far-way regions and even in women. Paganism came to be regarded as anti-popular and evil religion after the acceptance of christianity. The historic event in 1988 made the entity of paganism completely changed in many aspects, especially religious festivals (prazniki). The pagan gods were replaced with church gods, and the religious festivals were mixed and melted down each other. So, The reformation from above christianity had a lot of difficulty in spreading over the Kievan Rus. The church did not succeed in demolishing paganism. Anichkov, Russian Specialist in this problem, agreed to this opinion. He thought the struggle against the church continued to the 15-17 century. The church, in many respects, tried to destroy the remnants of paganism, and people resisted toward the church at least for many centuries. Kievan Rus developed on the basis of new religion for long time. But looking in the interior part, even the church could not compel the people believe the new religion. In this way the new type of festivals appeared with the church on the basis of paganism. At this point the Russian Christianity is the religion based on the paganism.
