Religion and food: Food and paganism in Russia - Focused on acceptance of Christianity and its relationship - Hwang, Sung Woo Food is a fundamental human requirement, so we may confidently assume that Russians were constantly concerned how to produce or otherwise obtain sustenance. And that food is such an everyday complex of problems, so it is mentioned in writing only in exceptional cases, for example famine or feast, survival or socially proscribed or favored and so on. Actually food is concerned with everything which human beings have cultivated, produced, and institutionalized, and we may regard it as culture. And food is essential to culture. As above mentioned, Russian food, paganism, and Christianity, in other words, food and religion is believed to be strongly related each other. And so through food which they have cultivated and eaten, we can assume that Russian people have connected with food and nature, universe. In the long run, definition on food, in the past or nowadays, is possible to explain on the base of cultural fundamental in specific period and region. Namely, practices in neglecting and abhorring specific food is product of longtime tradition. As a result, differences in food culture must be admitted in high-level framework of cultural comparativeness.
