The aim of this article is to review and re‐evaluate some original assumptions about reconciliation and forgiveness. I want to explore what has been identified as a paradox at the heart of the challenge to live forgiveness: Can the concept of a human capacity for forgiveness sit with the overarching and universal precept of the Lord’s Prayer – “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against?” – that was expressed so cogently by the gospel of the merciful father and the prodigal son (Lk 15)? The unparalleled narrative of the gratuitously forgiving father identifies forgiveness and reconciliation as central and indeed required elements for a truly Christian life. The implication is that it is theologically and psychologically appropriate and within our capacity to forgive and reconcile. Yet actual human experience does not seem to support the claim that it is within the capacity of every person. Are we being asked to do something that is impossible for us? To probe deeper into this question I will try to spell out what the “Gospel within the Gospel” – as Lk 15,11‐32 has been called – can tell us about the possible integration of human and spiritual ways of reconciliation.
