This article examined four aspects of forgiveness to understand the meaning and practice of forgiveness in broader contexts. It will contribute to developing a forgiveness model in Korea which would bring healing and reconciliation into the wounded and divided nation. First, forgiveness in interpersonal relationships aims at overcoming the resentment which is the most painful and negative feeling caused by offenses. Psychologists have developed a practical process of forgiveness as a way of healing. Second, moral and philosophical understanding of forgiveness values the resentment as an appropriate emotion which victims might have to defend self - respect in the face of wrongdoing. It claims that forgiveness should only be granted for reason which is consistent with self - respect. Third, forgiveness in politics is a collective and constructive effort to face and redeem the past of atrocities. Political forgiveness as illustrated in South Africa heals and restores the victims, perpetrators, and community for the purpose of national unity and reconciliation. Fourth, Christian forgiveness takes place in and by community. Forgiveness is not simply the absolution of guilt, but a community life. It is embodied by the life - long process of being reconciled with God, with one another, and with whole creation. It also is a community`s way of participating in God`s liberating activity in the world which frees both victims and offenders from the bondages of shame, wound, guilt, and evil. In Korean society it is not easy to make distinction between victims and perpetrators, because we hurted and killed one another in the midst of division and ideological conflicts. We are all filled with resentments, hatreds, and revenges. The Korean church can be a community of healing, forgiving, and reconciling.
