Opium War was the cause of the spread of Great game from the Middle East to the Far East. In 1856, after the Opium War Russia which did not want second India, quickly spread to the Far East and in the 1860, Russia has signed the Beijing agreement with China, through which Russia acquired a new territory of 400 square miles. The Great Britain has sought to block off the Russian efforts to consolidation of her own influence in the Far East and since the Great Game began in the Far East. For example, when Russia invaded Afghanistan, the Great Britain occupied the Hamilton island for the attack on Vladivostok in case of outbreak of war. The English expedition went to Manchuria in May 1886, when the relations between Russia and Great Britain exacerbated because of Afghan matters. The balance of power and blockading movement of Russia to Manchuria and Korea was the British foreign policy at that time in the Far East. Therefore, the antagonism between Great Britain and Russia, which sought for the non-freezing the port at that period, became a reason for the decision of making a alliance between Great Britain and Japan. And the alliance was established in 1902. After the conclusion of this alliance Japan decided to open a war against Russia. The fate of Korea was determined by the results of the war between Russia and Japan in 1904-1905. From the perspective of world history Japan could annex Korea after resolve the antagonism between England and Russia. From this perspective, we may assume that the expedition of Great Britain to Baekdoo Mt. led by James and Younghusband was made in context of the British foreign policy in the Far East and has a great historical value for Korea.
