Outward foreign direct investments from Russia have increased significantly. Russia is already a top outward direct investor among the emerging markets economies. Russian companies play a leading role in the international investment markets, and their movements are noted. Russia is the one of the most important potential economic partners to Korea. However, economic interchange between Korea and Russia is still insignificant situation and investment performance is also very disappointing. Korea should start a full-fledged relationship building with Russia.
In this paper, foreign direct investment trends and characteristics of Russia are analyzed, and policy agenda for expanding investment to Korea is suggested. Currently, Russia tries to revive underdeveloped domestic manufacturing sector, and collaboration with the leading overseas manufacturers could be important investment inducement. Considering the need for diversification of Korea"s energy supply source, Russia"s investment in the downstream sector could also be promising. Above all, throughout all the economic and non-economic sectors, the interchange between two countries should be preceded.
