Using the Korean educational longitudinal study data set, this study examines the effect of study time on students' academic performance. Specifically, this study estimates the effect of time spent on private education and self-study hours on students' test scores in mathematics, English and Korean subjects. This study innovates the previous studies by adopting the fixed effect model, which allows estimating more reliable estimates for the effect of study time on academic performance. The use of the fixed effect panel analysis model shows that time spent on private education and self-learning has a positive effect on mathematics test scores, while it has no significant impact on test scores in English and Korean. Moreover, this study tests the relationship between time spent on private education and time spent on self-learning. The empirical result implies that time spent on private education may plays a substitutive role toward self-study hours. This implies that an excessive increase in private education may harm student's academic achievement.
