The aim of this paper is to analyze the information structure of transitive phrasal verb (PV) constructions in the VPs, the underlying order of verb-particle combinations, the internal syntactic structure of PVs and the syntactic property of PV constructions. English has the movement rule of preposing a pronominal object when it is interpreted as given thematic information in the transitive PV constructions. As PV constructions with continuous order are more frequently used and more easily meet the selectional requirement than those with discontinuous one, the former is considered to be underlying. The particle in transitive PV constructions is generally analyzed as a complement to the verb or as the part of a complex verb. Given the discontinuous order of transitive PV as a derived structure, the overt object movement which is operated on the PV's pronominal complement containing defocussed [-F]-feature in Present-day English is considered to show a residual object shift.
