The purpose of the paper is to make a study of thematization as a discoursal process in the viewpoint of both discourse analysts and psychologists, and also to compare thematisation as a discoursal process with that as a sentential process in terms of FSP in such respects as the definition, types, and pragmatic functions. In chapter 2 the writer surveys the definition of theme in terms of FSP as a pre-step toward defining thematisation. Chapter 3 is devoted to reviewing the definition, types, and pragmatic functions of thematisation as a sentential process in terms of FSP. In chapter 4 the writer makes a study of thematization as a discoursal process with regard to the definition, types, and pragmatic functions. Thematisation as a discoursal process in the viewpoint of both discourse analysts and psychologists seems to function as a referent as the central theme as well as a starting point of the discourse, and be more general and inclusive than thematisation as a sentential process in terms of FSP. The thematization also seems to provide a starting point for the segment, paragraph, or discourse and a clear identification of the writer's topic area and the organization of the discourse or text, thus effectively constraining the way the piece of the text is understood and interpreted. This study will be of some help to the area of English language education, especially in reading and writing.
