Lee, S.H., Kang, H.S. Effects of two different intensities of acute exercise on insulin sensitivity. Exercise Science. 17(4): 391-400, 2008. Inconsistencies have been reported on the role of exercise intensity in improving insulin sensitivity to obesity. The purpose of thus study was to investigate the effect of acute treadmill walking(50% VO2max) vs. running(85% VO2max) on insulin sensitivity indices measured during oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT). Exercise duration varied from 60~150 minutes depending upon the subjects' initial fitness status that was designed to elicit a targeted energy expenditure of 1200kcal regardless of exercise mode(isocaloric exercise). Blood lipids(TC, TG, HDLC, LDLC), fasting glucose and insulin, OGTT were measured before and after each acute exercise trial. Group analyses showed no time by group interaction and a significant time effect only in several of the measured variables; both walking and running exercises induced significant improvements in TG(p<.022), with no significant group differences and significant improvements in fasting glucose(p<.013), insulin(p<.001) and HOMA index(p<.001), Insulin sensitivity index(p<.022), with no significant group differences. In conclusion, the current findings of this study indicate that regardless of exercise intensity, both walking and running would be equally effective on improving insulin sensitivity.
