This essay is to sum up the whole course and contents of photography education and its stream in Japan, where Shin Nakkyun, who established the concept of artistic photography in Korea, had studied photography. Japanese photography from the 1920s to 1930s was flourished along with artistic photos that were developed from transformation of pictorialism, which was imported from the western world. The Tokyo institute of photography, where Shin Nakkyun learnt photography, was founded in 1923 and was the first college course that taught photography in Japan. Its curriculum mainly focused on the acquisition of skill. The method of special printing, especially the method of pigment printing, that Shin Nakkyun thought as an important way of expression in artistic photo, was included in the curriculum at the Tokyo photography institute. As the first photography education in Japan was focused on cultivating studio craftsman, lectures of the Tokyo institute of photography consisted of those such as development of negatives, printing skill, photographing methods, lighting method, studio design, etc. Shin Nakkyun, who was educated in Japan, wrote many parts on photochemistry in his books, which was comparatively much more than those in Japanese photography education. It seems this was because he had already had an interest in chemistry before going to Japan. Depending on such cases, the study on Shin Nakkyun will be an important challenge to apprehend technical streams and atmospheres of Japanese photography in the 1920s.
