The purpose of this study is to assess female high school students' ability to construct graphs, and to afford fundamental data to devise teaching methods for improving students' graphing ability. Female high school students' ability to construct graphs varied according to the type of graphs. They were successful constructing pie graphs (64.6%) in comparison with other types of graphs - dot graphs (34.2%), line graphs (27.7%), 100% bar graphs (27.3%), bar graphs (24.0%) and scatters (9.1%), where they showed deficiencies of graphing ability. Students were sufficiently capable of constructing bar graphs, line graphs, dot graphs and scatters in terms of ‘representing all given data', but they didn't manage to show remarkable achievement in ‘expressing the unit of measurement of the variables' nor in ‘assigning variables to the axes' or in ‘scaling axes'. When it comes to pie and 100% bar graphs, students were good at ‘determining each areas in graphs in proportion to percentages of the data', and at ‘representing all given data', but they weren't successful ‘drawing pie graph right-handed'. And they experienced major difficulties placing the elements to be compared in the same order as in the other graphs when they were drawing more than two 100% bar graphs. Therefore, we concluded there is a urgent need for devising new teaching methods and preparing practical teaching materials to enhance students' ability to construct graphs on the basis of this research.
