The aim of the present study was to analyze the characteristic of the meaningful memorization of biological terms with the relative power spectral analysis of theta and alpha EEG activities. The tasks were presented as block designs for the memory recording and recalling of the high and low meaningful biological terms and the EEG recording. The EEG data were recorded (30 channels) from 21 right-handed healthy university students volunteered to be participants. The relative power spectral analyses of the EEG activities revealed that the power increased in the theta (4.0~7.9 Hz) band but decreased in the alpha (8.0~12.9 Hz) band during the memory recalling of the low meaningful biological terms tasks. The results supported the notion that meaningful memorization occurs when various terms and information are combined with students’ prior knowledge and own experiences to form personal and unique understandings. In addition, the results confirmed that the process of the memory is considerably complicated process and each type of biological term memory tasks is involved in specific brain activity. This study also discussed implications of these findings for teaching and evaluating in biology classroom.
