As marketability of China grows, the number of Korean firms plan to extend business to Chinese market increases and therefore obtaining profound knowledge of its market structure becomes critical to those companies. The objective of this study is to understand structure of China's distribution channel and its features with an analytical approach to economic systems, and consequently guide Korean companies in establishing logistics strategy for saturating Chinese market with their product and service. This study firstly sections China's distribution channel into four transitional phases; 1. distribution in socialistically planned economy system based on the theoretical model (1949~1978), 2. distribution in socialistically planned economy system based on the practical model (1979~1991), 3. distribution in socialistic market system prior to WTO entry (1992~2001), 4. distribution in socialistic market system posterior to WTO entry (2002~). According to this periodization we found that Chinese distribution system had been disregarded under labor theory of value and it only had aimed to accomplish plans set by government, however, through the distribution reformation in 1979 Chinese distribution companies had been permitted making their own profit. Market demand has determined price of products since 1992, and the distribution market has opened to foreign companies and capital after China joined WTO.
