The purpose of this paper is to investigate the real intention of Hu Hong(胡宏, 1105-1161)'s xing theory(性論). There are two implications in the xing: 'the xing as benti(本體)' and 'the xing in the individual things'. Xing is the basis of the establishment of the world, and it is inherent in all things and appears differently. In addition, to Hu Hong, tao(道) has the meaning of benti like xing and is not outside xing. Hu Hong’s xing goes beyond the concept of relative good and evil and has the meaning of zhishan[至善]. Also, the concept of good and evil in reality is related to zhongjie(中節) and bu-zhongjie(不中節) according to the realization of xing. Because sage people can realize xing, they cope with oncoming things with the things and respond appropriately to any situation[中節]. On the other hand, ordinary people cannot respond properly to the situation[不中節], because they cannot do it. Hu Hong defines this zhongjie and bu-zhongjie as good and evil respectively. Hu Hong mentions that xing cannot be defined as good or evil, not clearly referring to xing as zhishan. This has caused controversy in later generations, and it can be seen as a similar argument to the view of the world's good and evil in Buddhism. His xing theory, which did not specify xing's zhishan, had to be criticized by Chu Hsi who tried to reject Buddhism. Chu Hsi's criticism of Hu Hong was not only due to his theoretical interest.
