한나 아렌트는 아마도 가장 아이러니한 20세기 정치사상가 중 한 사람일 것이다. 사실 그녀 자신도 자신의 “개성 원리”(thisness)가 “식별은 가능하지만, 정의하기 쉽지않은 것”임을 인정했다. 그럼에도 이 글에서는 ‘아렌트 정치철학을 정치 미학으로 정의하는 것이 정당화될 수 있는가?’라는 특수한 연구 질문에 답하는 형식으로 그녀의개성 원리를 정의하려고 시도한다. 이 목적상 필자는 아렌트가 나중에 자신의 정치미학을 구축할 때 활용한 몇 가지 근본 이론적 통찰들을 도출한 칸트의 『판단력비판』에대한 아렌트 자신의 독해 내용을 먼저 검토한 다음, 그녀의 독특한 사유 방법론과‘인간다수성’에 관해 논의한다. 특히 후자는 아렌트 정치미학을 총체적으로 규정하는 근본 조건이다. 끝으로 필자는 앞선 논의들로부터 아렌트 정치미학이 작금 우리의 정치적 삶에 가지는 한 가지특별한 이론적 함의를 제시한다. 그것은 이제껏 아렌트 정치사상에서 활동적 삶과 관조적 삶 사이의 빠진 고리로서 존재해 온 ‘사회정의’와 그녀의 정치미학이 불가피하게맺게 되는 공생관계의 정치적 적실성이다.
