We investigated the outer surface of the permanent dyed hairs using scanning electron microscopy, sampled from 30 year old woman's virgin hair. The diameter of permanent dyed hair was about 90 ㎛ in diameter.
Cuticular cells were arranged overlapped in the surface of the hair and the scales were in uneven shape with sharpe borders. In scanning electron microscopy, scales of the hair surface were partly lifted off and separated. These separated portions of the cuticular cells were shown to be white as the electron density was lower than the neighbor hair tissue. Also, cuticular cells forming scales in the surface of the hair had a wide surface. The wider surface and uneven border of the scale is considered to be due to the separation of the cuticular cells by chemical components of the coloring agent during treatment.
