To examine whether bamboo extract, Bambusae caulis in Liquamen, suppresses the development of atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions in hairless mice induced by 2, 4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). The effects of Bambusae caulis in Liquamen were analyzed by measuring the trans epidermal water loss (TEWL), melanin and erythema of skin and investigated skin surface using scanning electron microscope. The trans epidermal administration of Bambusae caulis in Liquamen to hairless mice induced with DNCB inhibited the development of atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions by suppressing TEWL, melanin and erythema of skin, and morphologically. These findings indicate that bamboo extract suppresses the development of atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions in hairless mice induced with DNCB, clinically suggesting that bamboo extract, Bambusae caulis in Liquamen, may be used as a potential therapeutic agent.
