To investigate the improving effects of white tea water extract on skin wrinkle, skin aging animal model was produced by the irradiation of UVB to the backs of hairless mice for 12 weeks. And then experimental materials were applied topically for 4 weeks. Six to seven weeks female SKH-1 hairless mice were divided into five groups including normal (N: no UVB), control (C: UVB + saline), positive control (PC: UVB + 0.01% retinoic acid), experimental 1 (E1: UVB + 1% white tea water extract) and experimental 2 (E2: UVB + 2% white tea water extract) groups, five animals each group. Wrinkles for the C group were formed as a pattern of deep furrows and thick crests. Whereas wrinkles for the PC, E1 and E2 groups were formed as a pattern of shallow furrows and thin crests. Collagen fibers in dermis of the C group were broken severely and the density was sparse. Whereas collagen fibers in the dermis of the PC, E1 and E2 groups were almost intact with a regular arrangement. Elastosis was found in the dermis of C group with the infiltration of degenerated and clotted elastin. As for the amount of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) expression, PC, E1 and E2 groups were significantly lower than the C group. Therefore, white tea water extract could be used practically for the inhibition or improvement of skin wrinkle induced by UVB irradiation in hairless mice.
