Human Capital Investments and Interregional Wage Differences in a Southeast Asian Country The analysis presented in this paper contributes to the understanding of interregional differences in wage structures in a Southeast Asian country through a multidimensional analysis. In specific, the effect of regional residency on the relationship between human capital investments, particularly education, and individual wages in Indonesia is investigated. This analysis is especially interesting given the peculiar characteristics of Indonesia's economic structure and geographical setting. Data from the 1993 Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) are fitted to the Mincerian wage function and its extensions for the entire sample. The basic investigation with six regional dummy variables added into the Mincerian wage function shows some interregional wage variations. However, regions are found to have no significant effect on returns to human capital investment accomplished at the formal educational system. This result is obtained by a multidimensional analysis: interaction effects between age- cohorts and regions and geographical labor market segmentation are examined to determine whether returns to education are truly different across regions. Although the results are not shown explicitly in the paper, correction for selection bias on the labor market participation is carried out. But the estimate of the coefficient of the inverse Mill's ratio is insignificant in almost all cases. The results of the paper do not strongly support the hypothesis that differences in the labor market rewards across regions are larger in a country with a larger area. Particularly, it is striking that returns to education do not significantly differ across regions in such a large and archipelagic country as Indonesia.
