What are some of the challenges faced by students taking the FLEX (Foreign Language Examination) of Spanish? This study attempted to determine what variables influence the answering of testing items of high discrimination on the FLEX of Spanish. The methods used in this study included an analysis of the FLEX of Spanish examination and testing items. Three examinations of the FLEX of Spanish given in 2009 were analyzed based on Classic Item Analysis and Item Response Theory. In addition, eight testing items were administered which examined the differences between the results obtained by the Classic Item Analysis and Item Response Theory analysis of the FLEX of Spanish. The results of these analysis showed significant differences between these theories. The study concluded that the variables which influence at the discrimination level are: unfamiliar vocabulary and expressions, the extension of test items or answers, exceptional grammar. Finally, the study recommended that testing items that showed a cultural bias should be discarded.
