The purpose of this study is to examine the syntactic and semantic characteristics and limitations of the copulas, /pen/ and /kheu/ in the Thai language, and to find out their difference, and also to help Koreans to learn the Thai language efficiently through comparing and analyzing their corresponding Korean words. As a result of this study, through stricter analysis based on the results of preceding researches that the copula /pen/ in the Thai language is a homonym that is spelt the same but has three functions that are different from one another in meaning, whether or not it can match with time adverbs and tense auxiliary verbs was established as the additional criterion. As a result, the difference in meaning between the copulas, /pen/ and /kheu/ in the Thai language was able to be more precisely clarified. This study also examined what difference is there between the copulas- /pen/ and /kheu/, and the corresponding words in the Korean language, and the errors in the copulas that Korean learners make due to this difference was able to be analyzed. Based on the results of this study, it is considered that this study will enhance efficiency in the education of the Thai language in Korea or the education of the Korean language in Thailand, and will serve as the momentum to expedite studies on other copulas besides the copulas /pen/ and /kheu/.
