The Korean national curriculum for English education has so far focused on improving English instruction in academic high schools, while ignoring the particular language needs of vocational high school students. Few vocational high schools use texts specifically designed for vocational students English as a Foreign Language (EFL) needs. Instead texts are used which focus on translation and vocabulary improvement, which do not enhance communicative skills are used. Therefore, it is imperative that new texts be developed, which focus on the particular communicative skills needed to prepare students for careers in various trades. With this unmet need in mind, this study attempts to develop an instructional model for teaching vocational English in Korean EFL contexts. Ideally, vocational English education should be based on English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Content-Based Instruction (CBI), and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Drawing from these three approaches, a vocational English curriculum and instructional model was proposed and trialled in classroom settings. Both teachers and students found the instructional model more effective than the current model. This finding suggests that the instructional model could be effective in training teachers to teach EFL in vocational schools, and thus result in an increase in instruction tailored to the specific needs of students in Korean vocational high schools.
