This study addresses psychometric characteristics of a self-report questionnaire as a measure of second and foreign language (L2) learning motivation. The questionnaire was composed of items containing the broadened perspectives of L2 learning motivation, reflecting a composite of several models and theories such as a social psychological perspective, a cognitive perspective, and a neurobiological stimulus appraisal perspective on motivation. The data were analyzed to examine the dimensionality of the motivational inventory for Korean high school learners of English. The internal structure of this particular motivational inventory using multidimensional scaling provided support for the multidimensionality of the scale and the construct of language learning motivation, leading to an enhanced understanding of L2 learning motivation in that this study has addressed both theoretical and practical considerations in L2 learning motivation for Korean EFL learners. The research findings of this empirical study provide pedagogical implications that may beused in future curriculum development that will lead students to learn an L2 and keep them maintaining their language skills after they leave the classroom.
