According to Article 7(1) CISG, interpreters of the Convention should be guided by its "international character" "the need to promote uniformity in its application" and "the need to promote the observance of good faith in international trade." This provision tries to prevent divergent interpretations and applications. To have regard to the international character of the Convention also implies that the Convention has to be interpreted autonomously. The reason for the autonomous interpretation relates to the Convention's aim to achieve uniformity in interpretation and application. To promote uniformity in the application of the Convention, the court should try to take into account foreign case law as persuasive effect when interpreting the Convention. According to the provision, the CISG is to be interpreted and applied in a way that "the observance of good faith in international trade" is promoted. Although explicitly a guide to interpretation of the Convention, Article 7(1) CISG establishes a duty on the parties to act in good faith. Good faith is required not only in the performance of contracts, but also in the formation and interpretation of contracts. It is clear that no specific national good faith concept can be applied but only one which fits for international trade relations can be applied. The provision on the interpretation of the CISG does not mention the standards of interpretation. The lack of standard methods of interpretation creates divergent interpretations and hinder uniformity. The following canon may be used on the understanding that they are applied with due respect for the principle of autonomous interpretation: grammatical interpretation, historical interpretation, teleological interpretation, and systematic interpretation. It is also possible to apply the method of comparative interpretation restrictively.
