Significance of Scholarly Travel and Perceptions of Boundaries during Tang Dynasty China The Tang dynasty encouraged their bureaucrats to take short distance trips because it signified a peaceful and tranquil reign. Although long distance travel was discouraged in order to sustain a stable society, scholars often had to go on long distance journeys. Thus, scholars experienced a conflict between dynastic loyalty and the desire to improve their social standing(lixinyangming, 立身揚名). Short distance travel was for leisure while long distance journeys provided an opportunity for people to improve their scholarship. In other words, scholarly travel was a route through which a man who was not appointed to a government could make a name for themselves. Scholarly travel provided an opportunity for developing the desire to govern the kingdom, acquire new knowledge, and exchange with other scholars. Therefore, travel provided experiences that substantially supported government affairs, allowing a positive perception of travel. Travel by scholars to the western regions was special in that they aided in rapid promotion, resulting in many scholars abandoning the literary route and taking the military option to government service. Scholars in the Tang dynasty period described the western regions as a biting cold desert and inadequate region to live in emphasizing the psychological boundary between the Tang kingdom and foreign countries vis-a-vis their travels to these western regions.
