This study aims to review the overall characteristics and aspects of vocabulary used in letters written by Yoo Si-jung(1596-1658) in early Korean in mid-17 century, which was excavated from a tomb of the Jin-ju Yoos in Po-cheon. Fifty eight of his letters were found in the tomb. They were almost addressed to his wife. It is presumed that Yoo Si-jung wrote the letters from 1623, when he was appointed Eui-geum-bu official following In-jo Revolution (In-jo Ban-jung) to 1657, when he was discharged from duty as a governor of Gan-sung due to illness. The letters of Yoo Si-jung are so precious as to rank among the three letters of greatest literary value written in early Korean judging from the volume and the period in time they were written. The two other letters are the letters of the Soon-cheon Kims and the letters of the Hyun-poong Gwaks. This study summarizes the letters of Yoo Si-jung and analyzes the vocabulary used, classifying them into kinship words, diet related words, disease related words, paper related words and unit noun. Rare words are also analyzed according to their part of speech. 1. The kinship words used in the letters of Yoo Si-jung are classified into kinship words with a plural concept, words meaning a father-son relation, words meaning mother, wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law, a word meaning son-in-law, words meaning elder brother, younger brother, elder sister and younger sister, a word meaning grant parent and a word meaning grandchild. 2. The diet related words in the letters include ‘듕박계’, ‘빈쟈’, and ‘과 /과즐.’ Names of various kinds of fishes are found in the letters in relation to ritual food. As Yoo Si-jung was suffering from sickness at an advanced age, the letters used some disease related words. Some of these disease related words are pure Korean and the others are derived from Chinese character. 3. Words that have to do with paper include ‘고졍지 /황지’, ‘지’, and ‘명디 /명지.’Unit words used after the nouns denoting numbers and quantity include ‘닙’, ‘대’, ‘뎝’, ‘동’, ‘뭇’, ‘부’, and ‘이.’ 4. Rare words used in Yoo Si-jung’s letters are classified according to their part of speech. The rare nouns include ‘염긔’, ‘우즈렁’, ‘졈’, and ‘질지.’ The rare verbs include ‘밋받다’, ‘브스리다’, ‘비치이다’, ‘혜수하다’, and ‘뎜심하다.’ The rare adjectives include ‘무형하다’, ‘던득하다’, ‘Q다’, and ‘호졋다 /호졋하다.’ And the rare adverbs include ‘므스라’, ‘어머리’, and ‘어음버음.’
