Ever since its inception in the United States in 1972, the General Social Survey (GSS) has continued to have an enormous and far-fetching impact on promoting academic researches and developing social policies. A due and timely acknowledgement of this impact in recent years has led the East Asian countries to vie vehemently one another to adopt and implement the survey or its equivalent on a firm and steady basis. Along with other countries in the region, Korea has also launched the survey recently and is now playing a key role in advancing area studies on East Asia by using the survey data from a comparative perspective. To guide to a better understanding of the General Social Surveys in East Asia, and consequently search for the possibility of comparative studies in the region, the current manuscript introduces and compares their underlying characteristics for the three East Asian countries of Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The primary focus is put on two of the most salient survey characteristics: organizational and design characteristics.
