The aims of this study were to examine the effectiveness of health education self-efficacy and self-health management compliance through voluntary self-help group for hypertension. This study used case-control methodology. The quasi-experimental design using non-equivalent control group pre/post-test design was conducted from July to September, 2015. The subjects were 60 patients (experimental group=30, control group=30) who were taking hypertension treatment without complications and high blood pressure was under 180/100 mmHg from three internal and aged medicine hospitals in Seoul and Kyong-Ki districts. Interventions were taken over one hour in a week for eight weeks. There were included theoretical education of self-help care management, discussion, and skill initiatives. The effects of treatment were monitored the blood pressure when received general knowledge related hypertension, self-efficacy and implemented active self-health management. The pre/post test results of experimental and control groups were obtained as follows. After conducting a self-help program, the experimental group showed significant increase in a knowledge level of hypertension and self-efficacy compared to the control group. There were also improved in a implementation of regular stretching and exercise over 20 to 30 minutes and restricted sodium intake in the experimental group. While conducting the self-help program, 6.6 mmHg of maximum blood pressure and 3.7 mmHg of lowest blood pressure were decreased in the experimental group compared to the control group at the point of eight week. Based on the results, it is found that the self-help program applied on this study has improved effectively in patient’s degree of knowledge, self-efficacy and self-health management compliance. In addition, high blood pressure has also stabilized in a normal range with the intervention. The implication of this study is that the most significant strategy for health promotion of elderly hypertensive patients is to participate in health education activities with their peers. Therefore, it is considerably recommended the use of self-help program for workshops not only in tertiary hospital but also primary health care services.
