some limits of the system of Hegel’s objective idealism are discussed. Inparticular, I discuss the relation between Hegel’s objective idealism and thecategory of intersubjectivity, which is most overarching and dominant categoryof post-Hegelian philosophy. In other words, it is stressed that one of the crucial limits in the Hegeliansystem is closely interrelated with the fact that Hegel did not introduce thecategory of intersubjectivity into his philosophical system, and absolutesubjectivity—as the union of subjectivity and objectivity—plays a crucial, indeedcentral, role in Hegel’s philosophy. Therefore, it is suggested that it is worthnoting a new form of objective idealism, developed by R. Brandom and V. Hösle, who have attempted to overcome the limits of Hegel’s objective idealismthrough the introduction of the post-Hegelian concept of intersubjectivity.

The relation between language and reality is a matter of primary concern incontemporary western philosophies. Thus appear the main methodologies ofthe human sciences derived from the philosophy of language, hermeneutics,semiotics, etc. Hermeneutics emphasizes the function of communication in language. PaulRicoeur envisages this function respectively in the theories of discourse, text, andnarrative. Communication is, above all, a transmission of meanings. Thus, theunderstanding of meanings and the problems of interpretation and translationare on the rise. These problems are essential to our understanding of therelations, not only between past and present in a society, but also betweendiverse cultures. In the field of communication from a distance (in the spacetemporaldimension), the discourse cannot be actualized, so it has to passthrough the mediation of text (documents, artifacts, monuments…). The text is a written discourse, and has semantic autonomy, meaning that wemust follow a special procedure of interpretation in order to understand themeaning of the text. Ricoeur names this process ‘the Hermeneutics ofcommunication.’The Hermeneutics of communication is applicable both to thecommunication between past and present and to that between diverse cultures. Thus, we are always in a certain situation with some historical and culturalprejudices. However, we also have a horizon of understanding in which we can enlargeor restrict our point of view. We can communicate with others when we fuseour horizon with that of others, reflecting our prejudices. Communication from adistance in the space-temporal dimension is revived as a meaningfulcommunication when we strive to overcome, on the one hand, the culturalstrangeness derived from that distance and, on the other, the selflessness whichabsorbs the other into one’s own horizon. That’s how emerges the notion ofintersubjectivity founding the communication between self and other in thesurmounting of the absolute subjectivity of modern thought represented byDescartes and Hegel.
