This paper will examine where the translation discourse of Kim Uk, Ansu, exists in the trend of hermeneutic translation discourse, then examine how he reflects his translation philosophy in his translated products of western poems through analysis of his translations. Ansu translated and introduced western literary works in Joseun in 1920s and 1930s. He translated directly from the source text’s language. He was different from other translators such as Choi Namsun who used the Japanese translation as the source text and tried to enlighten the target language readers through translated works. Due to Ansu’s translated works, Joseun readers could experience western literary texts and enhance their understanding of western culture. Ansu presented his translation perception based on his translation practice. Ansu’s translated works and his translation discourse are regarded as a crucial information for studying the introduction of western literary texts in 1920s and 1930s. Ansu’s role in the Joseun’s translation history can be compared with that of Tytler who was the translator to present ‘the Priciple of Translation’, and of Benjamin who concretely commented on the role of the translator. They are regarded as a milestone of translation history in western translation theory. According to the result of analysis on Ansu’s poem translation, he tried to incorporate his literary skill in his translation rather than keeping faithfulness to the source texts. He adopted the domestication strategy of translation. In his introduction of foreign literary work, he put priority in making target language readers understand the contents of the source texts. This strategy might not be appropriate in literary translation. However, we can not judge his products strictly based on the criteria of the literary translation since literary products in particular can not be free from the periodical background. His role as a pioneer of the period was to translate the western literature from the source text’s language and introduce to the public in the enlightening period to modern times of Joseun.
