Prince Caspian: the Return to Narnia(1951) is the fourth book of The Chronicles of Narnia written by C.S.Lewis. Among seven books of Narnia, this novel was filmed secondly after The Lion, the Wardrobe and the Witch(2005), in 2008. In this paper, the focus is on the movie, not on the novel. In Narnia, there has been some catastrophe from Narnia’s conquerors such as White Witch and King Miraz. In particular, this text abounds in a few elements linked to language controlled by King Miraz who is Prince Caspian’s uncle. It is King Miraz who killed his brother Caspian IX, Prince Caspian’s father. King Miraz who rules the new Narnia is eager to dominate all kinds of language in Narnia. That is, King Miraz, ruler of the Telmarines, intends to deprive the use of language, related to Aslan and the four children, of Narnians, including talking animals. More specifically, deprivation and confinement of language is employed to all creatures including Narnians, Telmarines as well as talking beasts. There are three types of language which belongs to three categories of characters in this movie. Three types are as follows: language deprived, language confined, and language lost. For human beings in Narnia, King Miraz forced them not to speak about Aslan and the four Kings and Queens. Moreover, the previous Cair Paravel castle was forlorn by King Miraz. That is, its site and surroundings are abandoned with no living creatures. Interestingly, Cair Paravel has been changed for about 1300 years since the Kings and Queens went back to England. This is linked to Miraz’s intention of language control. He seems to want this site to be effaced from all the members of new Narnia as if this site reminds them of the Kings and Queens. When King Miraz came to have a successor, he contrived to kill Caspian. After Caspian ran away from the Miraz’s castle, he was in danger in the abandoned forest. At that time, Caspian’s blowing Susan’s horn to summon help brings all of the Kings and Queens to the ruined castle. Since the name of Aslan as a signifier produces countless signifieds, old Narnia is an object to be banned by King Miraz. The intention of King Miraz lies in a kind of completion of his desire, which reestablish his own kingdom in old Narnia. However, King Miraz’s desire could not be accomplished at any rate.
