I examined seven hypotheses on the construction type "Мне нечего делать," which I would call NÉ-K construction. It turned out that each hypothesis focuses only on some specific stage(s) of the derivation (or evolution) of NÉ-K construction. NÉ-K construction, i.e., DAT―NÉ-K―BE―INF, has as its deep structure a complex S with main negative existential clause and subordinate infinitival clause. Each clause is provided with its own DAT discourse topic. Discourse topic of subordinate clause may be either PRO or K. Мне нечего делать. мнеi [neg [∃ [PROi [делать что]]]] Мне некому работать. мне [neg [∃ [кому [работать]]]] The above complex structure gradually transforms (or evolves) into a simple S with a single DAT discourse topic. Major rules applied for the full derivation of NÉ-K construction are as follows: PROi deletion, movement of interrogative K to the leftmost position, shift of K from interrogative to indefinite pronoun, GEN NEG rule, elimination of consonant clusters in front of K, incorporation of NE and K, addition of Ø to NE-K, metathesis of BE and K, and encliticization of BE. Peripheral constructions such as NE―BE―K or BE―NÉ-K found in colloquial Russian, and topicalized variants such as INF―BE―NÉ-K or NÉ-K―DAT―BE―INF can be derived from the same deep structure with the same rules but with slight modification or non-application of some rules. ЕСТЬ К construction can also be derived from the same deep structure with, of course, only the omission of NEG. During the course of derivation/evolution all elements of the construction suffer functional changes as follows; DAT: discourse topic of main clause within complex S > discourse topic of simple S K: interrogative ( > relative ) > indefinite pronoun > integration with NÉ- BE: existential > copula > enclitic, tense marker INF: predicate in subordinate clause > compliment of K > compliment (or less likely, subject) of NÉ-K.
