The critical period means an age window during which an organism displays a heightened sensitivity to certain environmental stimuli and develops in a particular way due to experiences at this time. This period is very important, because it is the time when a specific skill or ability is most easily acquired. Therefore, it has been investigated in many areas such as visual, auditory, and language development and this paper aims to review some important studies of the critical period for musical development, especially, for the development of harmonic sensitivity. Most studies of the critical period for the development of harmonic sensitivity focused on when was the critical period and they found that it started around 5 year of age and continued until at least 12 years of age. Also, there are a few studies that investigated the effect of harmonic instruction on the development of harmonic sensitivity during the critical period and they showed that harmonic instruction during the critical period had a positive effect on the development of the harmonic sensitivity. However, much remains unknown about the effect of harmonic instruction during the critical period in spite of that the instruction during this period is, in general, more effective for the development than the same instruction at other times and that more developed harmonic sensitivity influences many musical activities such as singing, appreciation, and performance. Therefore, future studies need to investigate this issue more deeply and systemically.
