This paper aims to analyze the economic and cultural changes in North Korea through the change of monetary function, the general public's perception toward money, and the monetary institutions. Especially this paper pays attention to the recent progressive transformation of North Korea from planned economy to market economy. Money is a useful tool to analyze the transformation of socialist countries like North eventually to be perished in the stage of communism in the belief of many socialists, the circulation of money itself in the socialist countries had been intentionally suppressed.Therefore, the more widespread circulation of money and the general public's perceptional change toward money suggest that the essential changes of economic and cultural system are already in progress. With these in mind, this paper analyzes the characteristics of North Korea's money by comparing with those in the capitalist countries; to analyze the economic and cultural change through the designs & patterns of moneys issued during the every monetary reform period; and to analyze the transformation of North Korea into monetary economy since 1990.
