(Background and Purpose) Modern churches use the front chamber of the main chapel as a space for interaction between the congregation and clergy. Following this trend, the front chamber has been separated from the podium’s pulpit to allow the pastor or cleric to observe the congregation for most of the service. Passing through this front chamber, one can enter into the chapel, a space distinguished from the outside. In creating church space, the pulpit has been an important focal point since it can be used as a medium to connect the congregation and the front chamber. A church space is regarded as a place of interaction between God and man. Therefore, a number of experiments have already been undertaken to determine how to design this space to facilitate communication. Consequently, the aim of this research is to investigate a design method whereby the pulpit and light can be applied to church space. (Research Method) Recognition of a depicted object is a matter of sensory perception. Thus, the study’s hypothesis states that the shape of the pulpit can be expressed according to the way it is perceived. The effect of light on a pulpit’s characteristics was identified through an investigation regarding meanings of the pulpit and light; further, observations of interactions between the congregation and the pulpit as a result of light reflecting off of it were conducted. Subsequently, various representations of the pulpit were created. Additionally, the use of pulpits and light was investigated through a case study of modern church space designs. (Results) The hypothesis of this study states that light can be seen as a material object rather than a non-material object. Accordingly, the field theory and light theories of Louis Kahn, James Turrell, Ando Tadao, and Le Corbusier provided theoretical evidence for validating the hypothesis. (Conclusion) There is a need for a new understanding of the pulpit and the effect of light based on theoretical evidence linking the expression of the pulpit with the display of light. The significance of the study is in concretely defining the role and importance of the pulpit in designing church space. Building on this concept, continued research regarding pulpit design and light and their influence on the church environment is recommended in the future.
