The aim of this study is to understand the historical formation of the Chosen period patriarchal system and its internal dynamics by looking at the ways in which gendered spatial segregation and women’s exclusion from public space was fixed via state ruling-craft and the institutionalization of Neo-Confucian norms. Through a critical re-reading of Gyeongguk Daejeon (The Great Code of Administration) and Confucian textbooks for women, as well as oral life histories of elderly women living in the Yangdong region in Kyungsangbukdo, and also a deconstructive analysis of Hyangdan’s architectural structure and its embedded symbolic meaning, this study reveals that the gendered living compartments (re) arranged according to Confucian ideology, conditioned effective practices of technology for leading and controlling women’s domestic labor and sexuality. It further argues that women’s labor appropriated by the (Neo-) Confucian patriarchal power was complementary in men’s exclusive knowledge production, social networking, and information circulation which became the core mechanism for (re)constructing the patriarchal system. From the Foucauldian notion of ‘Panopticon’, this study draws the conclusion that space became a field for patriarchal hegemony, because the physical structure of the yangban house, Hyangdan, operated as an effective apparatus for male power through disciplining and controlling women’s time and space.
