Ch'angjak kugak, the Spectrum its Cultural Phenomenon DisplaysMikyung ParkCh'angjak kugak (New Traditional Music of Korea) occupies a special position in Korean musical culture. The premiere concert of Kim Ki-su's composition, <Hwanghwamanyonjo-gok> at 1940 was often quoted as its beginning. The history of Ch'angjak kugak has thus run down almost for 70 years and Scholars have viewed it as uprising, experimenting and multiplying/popularizing stages. At the beginning, the Korean traditional music faced abruptly the Western music tradition, and. many systems developed in Western culture such as orchestra, notation, composer-performer dichotomy, concert stages, and so on. began to be simply imitated. While there evolved much conflicts and awkwardness with negative criticism from the general public, various attempts of new generations of composer/performer/critics opened a new area for Ch'angjak kugak.Ch'angjak kugak is now an interesting phenomenon, the character of which is complex and dynamic. It raised many issues regarding such as national musical identity, modernism, and popularization. They have now become so mixed with those form modern music sector of Western Classical music tradition in Korean society that the necessity of Ch'angjak kugak as a separate social sector has begun to be doubted.
