This article examines the current milieu of traditional music-making in South Korea and the role the modern education system has played in shaping the professional lives of contemporary musicians. Trained in court and folk music genres from an early age, all have become engaged in a community of musicians and composers revising traditional music. Through first-person accounts, the article gives individual actors the spotlight as they relate the ways by which they navigate expectations regarding authenticity and representation. In using their narratives, I argue for a more nuanced examination of the contingencies defining tradition and, subsequently, Korean identity. These contingencies are complicated, multi-layered developments that together have reared the current generations of musicians. Through interview excerpts and discussion of the education system molding generational and categorical divides in traditional music culture, this article highlights the complexities—the individual struggles and dreams—of transforming a musical tradition.
