In Korea are there two different terms of world music used: one is "segye ŭmak," and the other, "wŏldŭ myusik." The former, "segye ŭmak" is the translation of the world music and the latter, "wŏldŭ myusik" its transliteration. Thus the two terms mean the same, that is, the world music, but have different connotations. Misunderstood of their connotations, and of their specific references, these two terms have caused much confusion in Korea. This paper deals with the history of the usage of "world music" in the West, dealing it in two different lines, that is the academic and the commercial. It explains the Korean situation of the world music: While the academic origin of term "world music" came into usage as "segye ŭmak" in Korean academic circles, the commercial origin of the term as "wŏldŭ myusik" into the Korean commercial sector. Latter part of the paper deals with current issues and phases in regards to the world music in Korea in four different directions: 1) the academic and scholastic, 2) the broadcasting and communications, 3) the stage performance and festivals, and 4) the research and education about the concept of Korean multi-cultural society. The root and embryo of the world music seem meager, but in the midst of unparalleled new era it presages its full growth in Korea.
